The Sir Robert Hadfield Wing was developed by Kajima and opened in 2006 and stands as a stunning gateway building to the Northern General Hospital complex. The after-care facility was created for the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation, the second largest NHS foundation trust in the country.

It replaced the old Vickers medical wards, which were built in 1878. It was intended to decommission the old wards from everyday use and either demolish the buildings or use them for non-clinical purposes. The Hadfield Wing contains 168 beds, half of which are in single rooms with ensuite facilities offering comfort and privacy for patients.

The layout is designed to maximise the benefits of natural light and ventilation, providing a calming environment for the recuperation of patients. Wards are carefully arranged to ensure clear sight lines from the nursing stations to every bedside.

The result is a modern health facility, focusing on care for the elderly. It received a high recommendation from the CABE and NHS estates review.
